I Eat, Therefore I Am:OH LA LA French Crepes & Home Cooking

A cute little green and white restaurant is nestled among shops near Hualien Railway Station. On the green signboard, in addition to the name "OH LA LA", there is a French phrase in smaller print: "Je mange donc je suis," meaning "I eat, therefore I am."

As a Frenchman who is very particular about food, Nicolas Antoine, the boss at OH LA LA, insists that the crepes served at his restaurant adhere to the original French recipe. He hopes to bring the good craftsmanship, inherited from his grandmother in Brittany (birthplace of French crepes), to the people of Hualien.

Nicolas and his wife Guan Ying met in Taiwan, fell in love in the UK, and finally chose to get married in Taiwan. The restaurant created by the two, although small, is clean and bright. In addition to French crepes, main courses such as French cast-iron stews are also available on the menu. Guan says these dishes go well with rice, a combination that perfectly suits the Taiwanese palate. Most customers will order a cast-iron stew as the main course and then, after the meal, enjoy some sweet crepes and French cider—a classic and authentic combination.

Marseille Seafood Stew, the restaurant’s most popular dish, was developed by Nicolas and Guan. The stock is derived using seabass bones, shrimp paste, and five kinds of vegetables. Five or six kinds of seafood, such as fish, fresh shrimp, clams, mussels, and squid, are then added. Customers will surely appreciate the arduous cooking process and fresh ingredients once they experience the multi-layered flavors of this delicious stew.

The two truly knows the hospitality of Hualien people. Over the past couple of years, many regular customers have become their good friends. When their first child was born, many customers sent them gifts - a gesture that really warmed their hearts.

Nicolas has always liked Asia and feels that Hualien has a relatively relaxed pace of life compared to Paris, London and other big cities. It is very comfortable and also offers immediate access to beautiful natural scenery. On holidays, the couple likes to go to Sanzhan River to enjoy water-based activities. When foreign friends come to Hualien, they take them to the mountains for barbecues and picnics, and to show off the beauty of Hualien.
